Police gear is the stuff that they need to carry out their day-to-day duties.   by Gautam Punjabi

When you think of the range and diversity of what a police officer will come across on an average day you will understand the range of police gear they need to carry with them. A foot patrol officer could be dealing with a violent drug addict one day and giving directions to old ladies the next. The range of police gear they need on a daily basis is quite broad

If you think of a typical police officer, you will immediately visualize the uniform, the baton and sidearm. That is a pretty standard thought of what they carry. However, the full range of police gear is rather large, and typically, an officer will carry a minimum of 9kg (20 pounds) of gear with them day-to-day. That is a lot of extra to carry around but it is essential to maintain their safety. Not only does an officer need to carry the usual things like pencil, notebook and paperwork, they need to have a bulletproof vest on, and carry a baton, a flashlight and some form of restraint such as handcuffs.

In the early days of policing, the police gear issued would have been very small. Typically they would have carried a handgun in a holster, a nightstick and handcuffs. The holster would have been attached to what was known as a Sam Browne belt, which was a wide belt normally made of leather, which had a strap that extended diagonally over the officers right shoulder. There is no standardized set of police gear, as what an officer needs will differ depending on their area of duty. The most common items are their gun, handcuffs, baton and probably a flashlight.

Foot patrol officers will carry all the police gear they are likely to need for their duties. The officers will need all the normal things but some additional police gear them may carry is a radio, possibly a cell phone or pager. Communication with the precinct and other officers is crucial. Of course if the officer is in a vehicle the range of items they can carry increases. Often a patrol vehicle would have first aid kit, medical equipment such as a defibrillator, testing equipment for drugs and alcohol and a computer.

During their day-to-day duties an officer could face dangerous and often deadly situations and their safety must remain top of the list. Much of the police gear is designed with the officer’s safety in mind. The vests they wear must protect against bullets and impact injuries, the duty belt must enable them to carry all they need with space for additional police gear should the need arise. Among all this the other thing is comfort. If an officer is uncomfortable and has poor quality police gear it will affect their abilities.

Arguably the most important police gear would be the footwear an officer has. Most of us will know the misery of poorly fitting, badly made uncomfortable shoes and boots. If a foot patrol officer has painful sore feet, it will impact on how effective they are in their line of duty. We really don’t want anything to impair an officer in the course of his or her duties. The next time you see a police officer, give a little thought to the police gear they carry. They have life saving vests on, carry weapons to help protect themselves and us. The police gear may be weighty but it could save lives.

Sparkle [VHS]

Sparkle [VHS]

$6.50

Before Dreamgirls hit cineplexes in 2006, there was Sparkle. Released in 1976, the low-budget movie (which is also loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes) achieved somewhat of a cult following among fans that enjoy a good cry along with their kitsch. Sparkle tells the rags-to-riches (and rags again, for some of the characters) tale of three sisters with gorgeous voices. There’s …

Coquette [VHS]

$19.98

Mary Pickford won an Academy Award for her performance in Coquette, her first “talking picture.” Billed as “a drama of the American South,” the movie features Pickford as a classic Southern belle. However, as the film takes place during the Jazz Age of the 1920s, not the antebellum South, Pickford’s version of Scarlett O’Hara is a flapper. (The party scenes with dancers wildly doing the “black bot…
